WilleyWorld Community Productions has set auditions for the drama "Inherit The Wind," the eighth annual summer show to kick off Riverfest.
Walt Willey, co-founder and artistic director of WilleyWorld Community Productions, and adviser Mary Morgan will conduct auditions from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 14, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 717 Chambers St., in Ottawa. Auditions will be in the church’s basement.
Casting for 21 men and eight women (some doubling of roles possible). Looking for boys and girls ages eight to 12. All roles open. No previous theatrical experience is required. Those interested will be asked to do readings from the script, alone and in combination with others. Those who attend Saturday may be asked to return on Sunday for additional reading.
“We are thrilled to be doing this thoughtful, powerful drama for the first time in this area in many years,” said Willey.
“This show is well-known from the movie of the same name, starring Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and Gene Kelly,” Morgan noted. “The play is incredibly moving and has a message especially important in an election year, think for yourself.”
“'Inherit The Wind' is based on true events, what became known as the Scopes monkey trial,” Willey added. “But this is not a play about the Bible and creationism versus science and evolution. It’s about human beings’ right to think and use one’s mind.”
“We are also looking for people interested in working backstage as well,” Morgan noted.
Rehearsals are scheduled to begin in late May. Production dates will be announced shortly, but performance dates will include Friday, July 28, through Sunday, July 31, and possibly Thursday, Aug. 4, through Sunday, Aug. 7.
